Getting good sleep is important now more than ever and yet many of us struggle with it to some degree. There are many theories and reasons why this is happening, but suffice to say, the modern lifestyle isn’t doing us any favors in this department.

For over 10 years, I had problems with sleep myself. I even had true insomnia for a short while.

Then I started to meditate, quit drinking alcohol (another story altogether), and lowered my coffee consumption and things got much better. I didn’t need sleep meds anymore.

These days, most nights I wake up at the same time in the middle of the night. My research shows that this can mean a few things is going on. Also, be sure to watch the video at the very bottom that explains a lot about what happens when we sleep and why we need it.

Sleep issues affect about 33 percent of the entire population of us these days. That’s a big deal and a major health concern. And believe it or not, we don’t really understand why. Our best guess is modern stress + overthinking + poor diet/lifestyle and that means a lot of moving parts and covers a lot of ground.

We don’t conclusively know why we even sleep, we just assume that it’s for rest, but if you look deeper that’s not the case at all.

One thing is clear, sleep is absolutely essential for our wellbeing and mood, according to the National Sleep Foundation.

Just think about how debilitating sleep deprivation can be for a second. Personally, if I get only 4 hours sleep I can’t function and 5 hours I feel moody and like I’m operating at 60-75 percent across the board.

Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that is you wake in the middle of the night around 3-5am, you could be experiencing ascension. Which means some important spiritual shifts are happening for you.

I know this may sound hoaky to some, but it seems the modern Western science keeps playing catch up with the ancient East and the wisdom/s they held long before our time.

According to this ancient medicine, it could mean other things as well.

Traditional Chinese Medicine also believes in the chakra-meridian system, and energy system, that runs throughout our body shifting energy around through electro-magnetic mechanisms we are just starting to understand.

When there is a blockage in these energetic channels via life events and stress, this can cause you to wake at night.

What time do you wake in the middle of the night?

9 pm to 11 pm

What time do you go to bed?! Kidding. This means you are having trouble falling asleep in the first place and is probably a stress issue.

Remove any electronics from your bedroom and avoid using any type of computer or accessing the Internet 2 hours before bed. Try reading and meditation, or a hot bath and light restorative yoga session to relax your mind and body.

11 pm to 1 am

Have any resentments? Even if you say no, next time you wake at this hour get up and pull out a pad of paper. Write down what makes you mad, who are you angry at, what has been irritating you lately.

Also, this is typically when your gallbladder breaks down fats consumed during the day. If you had a double-cheeseburger at the local fast food joint it could wake you later at night.

1 am To 3 am

This is when your liver is doing its thing and if you drank alcohol that day the liver-cleansing process of that indulgence could be waking you up.

3 am to 5 am

As we mentioned earlier, this could be a sign of spiritual progress/cleansing.

It can also be associated with the health of your lungs, which is said to be where we process our sadness. If this remains a nightly thing at this hour you may want to consider getting a therapist to help you with your emotional health. I did 10 years of therapy and I can attest to the positive results from it.

5 am to 7 am

This is when the large intestine is doing its thing. Which means you are just waking to use the bathroom.

If that’s not the case, it could be emotions that need to be dealt with and the perfect time to wake and start a journaling + meditation practice.

One more reason to get a good night’s sleep…
